Sexy Dr. Seuss
One of my fave generative exercises
Last week I was in a writing workshop with StoryStudio and Deesha Philyaw, and it was a helluva time. The workshop was centered on the theme of sex and bodies, and as you imagine, writing about sex in a room full of people you just met can be a bit daunting. But the brillliance and tact of Deesha and my peers helped foster an environment that allowed us to approach these “taboo“ topics with a playful state of mind. We learned to engage with sex and sex writing through a myriad of generative exercises: sexy one liners, confessions, or in my case a “sexy Dr. Suess style story.” The following consists of a conversation between the protagonist of my novel in progress (Lex) and an unnamed narrator.
I had too much fun writing and sharing this piece in class so I figured I’d share it with all of you. I hope you enjoy reading or listening to it half as much as I enjoyed making it.
Are you Lex,
The one that likes to have sex?
Why yes, I’m Lex
The one that likes to have sex
Well where does one have the best sex, sex above the rest
Can you have it in a house
Or next to a mouse
Yess, you can have it in a house
Or next to a mouse
What about a bed
Or inside a shed
That works too
On a bed or inside a shed
What about with the one you love
Aside some doves
I don’t know,
I’ve never had it with the one I love,
Or aside doves
But you’re Lex
Lex that likes to have sex!
I know, but I’m afraid you see
Of *ahem* monogamy
What scares you friend
It’s death, not love that is the end.
I know, but they’re the same in a way
Surely you agree.
Yes I do, because a part of you
Must die to become
The one you want to be
